NOTE

FARM ANIMALS

Farm animals are those animals which are reared by man for food, work, guard, sports, economic and social purposes.

 

TYPES OF FARM ANIMALS

  1. Mammals: these are animals that produce their young ones alive and feed them with milk e.g goats, cattle, rabbits, sheep etc

Characteristics of mammals

  1. they have hairs on their body
  2. they give birth to young ones alive
  3. the mother mammals feed their young ones with milk from their mammary glands or breast
  4. they have different types of teeth
  5. they are warm blooded

 

  1. Birds: These are animals that lay eggs which hatch into their young e.g chickens, ducks, geese, turkey, guinea fowls, pigeons, canary etc

Characteristics of birds

  1. they are bipedal i.e they walk on two legs
  2. they are warm blooded
  3. they have their bodies covered with feathers
  4. they are oviparous i.e egg-laying
  5. they have legs protected by scales
  6. they have their eggs covered with shell

 

  1. Fishes: these are animals that live in natural or artificial water bodies e.g shark, mackerel, cod etc

Characteristics of fish

  1. they have streamlined body
  2. they have three body divisions; head, truck and tail
  3. they are cold blooded
  4. they are oviparous i.e egg-laying
  5. they are divided into two: bony fishes(fishes found in fresh water) and cartilaginous fishes(fishes found in salt water)
  6. their bodies are covered with scales
  7. they have no neck
  8. they have fins on their skins and gills for respiration
