NOTE

METHODS OF CONTROLLING WEEDS

1. Mechanical method: this includes

  1. hand pulling- this is the use of hands in the removal of weeds
  2. hoeing- this is the use of hoes and cutlasses in the removal of weeds
  3. tillage- this is the use of cultivators or weeders in the removal of weeds
  4. Mowing- it is the use of lawn mowers in the removal of weeds
  5. flooding- this is the use of flood for 3 to 8 weeks to a heaight of 15cm to 25cm
  6. Burning- this is setting the weeds on fire
  7. smothering- it is the use of non-living materials like paper, straws, mulch etc in the removal of weeds
  8. Crop rotation- in this method, a weed is starved to death when crops grown are rotated to exclude crops associated with a particular weed

2. Biological methods: this includes

  1. leaf eating beetle can reduce the population of a weed called hyperioum perforation
  2. cover crops obstruct the emergence of weed and denies light-loving weeds the required conditions to germinate
  3. ruminant animals can be used to control weed through controlled grazing

3. Chemical methods: it is the use of chemicals e.g herbicides to eliminate weeds. Types of herbicides include

  1. selective- kills plants of a particular kind
  2. non-selective- kills all plants where they are applied
