EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher then explains the steps to identify a topic sentence

Steps to Identify the Topic Sentence

1.   Read the Entire Paragraph:

o    Begin by reading the whole paragraph carefully to understand the overall message and context.

2.   Look for the Main Idea:

o    Identify the sentence that encapsulates the primary focus or argument. This is usually the sentence that provides the most important information about the paragraph.

3.   Identify Supporting Details:

o    Examine the other sentences in the paragraph. They should provide examples, explanations, or evidence that support the main idea.

4.   Check Sentence Structure:

o    Topic sentences often appear at the beginning of the paragraph, but they can also be found at the end or in the middle. Look for a sentence that summarizes the main point.

5.   Ask Questions:

o    Consider what the paragraph is trying to convey. Ask yourself, "What is the most important thing I should take away from this paragraph?" The answer will likely lead you to the topic sentence.

Example

Paragraph: "Regular exercise is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health. Engaging in physical activities like jogging, swimming, or cycling helps strengthen the heart and lungs. Additionally, exercise releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress. Many studies have shown that people who exercise regularly report feeling happier and more energetic."

Identifying the Topic Sentence:

  • Main Idea: The paragraph discusses the importance of exercise.
  • Topic Sentence: "Regular exercise is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health."
  • The rest of the sentences provide supporting details about how exercise contributes to physical health and mental well-being.
