NOTE

INFLUENCE OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES ON THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

  1. Farming: this activity replaces natural vegetation with food and cash

Crops

  1. Land clearing replaces the natural environment with bridges, buildings

and other establishments

  1. Road construction replaces natural environment with roads
  2. Building of dams, canals and floodgates for supply of electricity and for

irrigation purposes affects the nature of the physical environment of man

  1. The nature of mining processes creates potential negative impacts on

the physical environment

  1. Drilling activities by man negatively affects the physical environment
  2. the intensive overgrazing of plants by animals in an area for an extended

period of time without sufficient recovery period can negatively affect the

environment

  1. the deliberate cutting down of trees for various purposes destroys the

habitats of millions of species of plants and animals. Deforestation leaves

the soil uncovered making it lose its fertility

INFLUENCE OF THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT ON HUMAN ACTIVITIES

  1. Settlement pattern: the physical features of our environment influences

the types of settlement and building patterns within our society

Nigeria have four main geographical zones

  1. coastal zones; houses here are built with wooden foundations above sea

level with a mud base, stick frames and thatched roofs

  1. forest zone: houses here are mud houses with thatch roofs, cemented

houses roofed with corrugated iron sheets

  1. Semi-savannah and savannah zones: here the houses are made of mud

with thatch roofs

  1. Economic activities: People living coastal areas engage heavily in fishing

activities because of the abundance of water bodies around them. People

who live in forest areas engage heavily in root crop farming, hunting and

lumbering activities because of the presence of thick forest and timber

yielding trees. People who live around semi-savannah and savannah areas

where there is abundance of grass in their environment engage in animal

rearing and farming. They also engage in tanning due to the availability of

animals which provides hides and skins

  1. Mineral deposits: The physical environment also influences the type of

mineral deposits in an area. For examples, mineral resources like crude oil

and palm oil are found in riverine areas and lowlands while mineral

resources like coal, iron ore, tin and lithium are found in high lands and

grassland areas

  1. Traditional beliefs and worship: people who live in the coastal areas

believe in river gods and goddesses while those who live in forest zones

believe in tree gods. In the semi-savannah and savannah areas, most

people who reside there believe in rock or stone gods
