INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by explaining that with the exception of the ‘to be’ verb which has eight different forms, other state-of-being verbs and action verbs usually have five forms.

The forms include

1.   Base of infinitive(the form listed in dictionaries)

2.   Present tense

3.   Past tense

4.   Perfect tense

5.   Progressive or continuous tense

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher further explains that the various forms of verbs are determined by whether the verb is regular or irregular.

Verbs that form their past tense and perfect tense by adding ‘ed’ are known as regular verbs e.g look-looked, dance-danced, cook-cooked etc

Verbs that do not form their past and perfect tenses by adding ‘ed’ are known as irregular verbs. Examples are: wear, win, speak, go, see etc
