HISTORICAL SITES

Historical sites are sites of ancient monuments, and very significant to the history of a nation. It is an official location where pieces of political, military, cultural or social history ahs been preserved due to their cultural heritage value.

IMPORTANCE OF HISTORICAL SITES

  1. It gives people knowledge of the past
  2. It adds value to tourism
  3. It creates jobs
  4. It enhances knowledge of cultural heritage
  5. It helps us build strong sense of identity by defining and distinguishing communities

NOTE

NOK PEOPLE

The Nok culture was one of the earliest known societies of Western Africa. The use of iron, in smelting and forging tools, appeared in Nok culture by at least 550B.C to 500A.D. Nok is a village in Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria.

Nok is located East of the Niger River and North of the Benue River which is today North Central Nigeria.

The Nok culture is an early Iron age population whose material remains are named after the Ham village of Nok in Kaduna State.

The Ham people are found predominantly in Jaba, Kachia and Kagarko Local Government areas of Southern Kaduna, Nigeria. They speak the Hyam language and refer to themselves as Ham.

Nok Art refers to huge human, animal and other figures made out of terracotta pottery.

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF NOK ART

  1. Elaborate coiffure
  2. Pierced eyes, nose, mouth, and ears
  3. Ears set back, often low and small
  4. Cylindrical heads
  5. Semi-circular/triangular eyes and lids
  6. Flared nostrils

 

SIGNIFICANCE OF NOK CULTURE IN NIGERIA’S HISTORY

  1. It demonstrated the cultural heritage of the Nigerian people
  2. It proves the artistic expertise of the Nigerian people
  3. It shows the fact, that the people took part in several stages of development of Stone age period
  4. It shows inter-group relations between the Nigerian people in the past
  5. It marked the transitional era between the Stone age and Iron Age in Nigeria since the remains are made from iron and stone
