GENERATION OF COMPUTERS

Third (3rd) Generation of Computer (1964-1971)

These are computers produced from 1964-1971. It is based on Integrated Circuits (ICs). It supported remote time-sharing, processing, and multi-programming operating system. It used Large magnetic core, magnetic tape/disk.

Some of the High Level languages used are:

  1. FORTRAN-II ii. COBOL iii. PASCAL PL/1
  2. BASIC v. ALGOL-68, etc

Examples are;

  1. UNIVAC 1108
  2. UNIVAC AC 9000
  3. IBM-370/168
  4. IBM-360 series
  5. Honeywell-6000 series
  6. PDP (Personal Data Processor)
  7. TDC-316

FEATURES OR CHARACTERISTICS

  1. Based on Integrated Circuits (ICs).
  2. More reliable than 1st and 2nd generations.
  3. More Smaller size
  4. Produced less heat compared to previous generations.
  5. Faster than vacuum tubes and Transistor-based computers.
  6. Lesser maintenance
  7. Costly
  8. AC required
  9. Consumed lesser electricity
  10. Supported high-level language
