NOTE

CROP PLANT FORMS

A typical flowering plant is divided into two systems namely

A. The root system

The root is the lower part of a crop plant which grows almost straight downwards into the soil. The root system is made up of the main/primary/tap root and the fibrous root.

Functions of the root

  1. to fix the plant firmly in the soil
  2. to absorb water and minerals from the soil for plant use
  3. it serves as a special organ for storing food e.g yam, cassava, etc
  4. it conducts manufactured food in the plant
  5. it can prevent soil erosion
  6. it can be used for preparing drugs

B. The shoot system

The shoot is the major part of the plant that grows upright above the ground level which bears all the members of the system. The shoot system is made up of the stem, branches, leaves, flowers, fruits and bone in them.

Stem is te part of the plant that produces the branches, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. There are different types of stems; erect stem, runner stem, rhizome, a stem tuber or a climbing stem

Functions of stem

  1. it conducts(water and minerals) to and from the leaves
  2. to support the branches and leaves and exposes them to sunlight for food manufacture
  3. it carries the reproductive part of the plant(flowers)
  4. it can store food e.g sugar cane
  5. it can be used for the propagation of crops e.g cassava, bitter leaf, sugar cane, sweet potatoes etc
  6. it supports the flowers and fruits in the best position for pollination and dispersal of seed
  7. it can be used for drug manufacture

EVALUATION:    1. Draw and label a plant

  1. Explain the following
  2. shoot system
  3. root system
  4. State the functions of
  5. stem
  6. root
