NOTE

PERSONAL, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH

According to WHO(World Health Organization), Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being of a person not just the mere absence of diseases and infirmities.

 DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH

  1. HEREDITY: This is the sum total of all the traits passed down from a parent to their children. These traits could be physical and mental e.g Asthma, diabetes, sickle cell anemia etc
  2. ENVIRONMENT: This is the sum total of one’s surroundings. Here is how it affects one’s health;

- a dirty environment produces germs and disease carrying organisms

- a hot environment can cause skin cancer

- a smoky environment can cause respiratory diseases e.g asthma, whooping cough etc

- a noisy environment can cause deafness

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF A HEALTHY PERSON

He/She is

  1. physically fit
  2. emotionally stable
  3. can interact effectively
  4. works without being tired easily
  5. can easily comprehend mental tasks
  6. has resistance to diseases or infection

 

EVALUATION:    1. Define “health”

  1. Explain using typical examples the determinants of health
  2. What are the characteristics of a healthy person?
