GENERATION OF COMPUTERS

Second (2nd) Generation of Computer (1956-1963)

These are computers produced from 1956-1963. Computers of this generation used transistors and it supported assembly language as well as high-level programming languages like FORTRAN, and COBOL.

Examples are;

  1. IBM 1400 series
  2. IBM 1620
  3. IBM 7094 series
  4. CDC 1604
  5. CDC 3600
  6. UNIVAC 1107

 

FEATURES OR CHARACTERISTICS.

  1. It used Transistors
  2. It supports machine and assembly languages.
  3. iii. It generates less heat.
  4. It is smaller in size compared to first-generation computers
  5. It consumed less electricity
  6. It is faster than first-generation computers
  7. It is reliable than the first generation computers.
  8. It is very costly
  9. It requires AC for cooling
