/ᴂ/

When you say the sound /ᴂ/, the tip of your tongue touches the lower front teeth, the back of your tongue is down and your lips are spread. /ᴂ/ is a short vowel sound.

/α:/

When you say the sound /α:/, the tongue is low inside the mouth, the tip of the tongue is not near the lower front teeth and the back of your tongue is down. The mouth is open, the shape of the lips is oval and the jaw is down a little.
