GENERATION OF COMPUTERS

First (1st) Generation Computers 1940-1956

These are computers produced between the 1940 and 1956. It used vacuum tubes.

Examples are:

  1. ENIAC- Electronic numerical Integrator and Computer
  2. EDVAC- Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer
  3. UNIVAC-Universal Automatic Computer
  4. IBM-701- International Business Machine
  5. IBM-750- International Business Machine
  6. UNIVAC-1 (Universal Automatic Computer 1)

 

FEATURES OR CHARACTERISTICS

  1. It is based on the Vacuum tube technology
  2. It used machine language only 0 and 1
  3. iii. It was very costly
  4. It produced a lot of heat
  5. It required large space
  6. It needed AC for cooling
  7. It consumed a lot of electricity
  8. It was very unreliable
  9. It had Slow Input / Output process
