NOTE
RESOURCES
Resources are all human and material deposits in the environment useful
for producing goods and services for man.
TYPES OF RESOURCES
- Natural resources: These refer to anything that exists naturally in the
physical environment that helps to satisfy human needs e.g land, water,
forest, fisheries, animals, minerals etc. Some types of natural resources
include
- agricultural resources- food crops and cash crops, wood from forest, and meat/fish/eggs from livestock
- Mineral resources-These refer to deposits of economic importance in or on the earth’s crust e.g coal, bitumen, iron ore, gold, crude oil, clay etc
- Water resources- These refer to water bodies that are found in different parts of Nigeria e.g oceans, river, lakes, streams, seas etc
- Human resources- These refer to human beings who control, organize and utilize all the resources found in the physical environment to satisfy human needs. Nigeria is blessed with abundant human resources both skilled and unskilled labour.
- Capital resources- These refer to assets that are used in the process of producing goods and services to satisfy human needs e.g equipments, inventory, labour, tools, machinery and buildings
Uses of Agricultural resources
- it provides food for man
- it provide raw materials for industries
- it provides income for the family and government through tax payment
- It provides employment opportunities for people who engage in it
- It helps to check and control erosion in the environment
- it provides foreign exchange for the country
Uses of Natural resources
- Coal- Used in making coal gas, tar etc
- Bitumen – Used in road construction and in covering roofs
- Cocoa- Used in making chocolate powder and drinks and can be taken as fruit
- Cotton- used in making thread, cloth etc
- clay- used in making bricks, earthen pots etc
- crude oil – used in making petroleum, gas, kerosene etc
- gold- used in making coins, ornaments, jewellery etc
- Iron ore-used in making steel
- Limestone- used in making cement
- Salt – used in preserving food, used in giving a better flavor and taste to food for eating etc
- Granite – Used in building houses
- Marble – used in building houses and in making statues
- Rubber- used in making tyres, rubber, gloves, boots, buckets etc
- Silica - Used in making glass, used in computer and electronic equipments
Uses of water resources
- It is used in producing hydropower for electricity
- It is used for agricultural purpose and the irrigation of farms
- It is used for commercial and industrial purposes
- It is used for domestic purposes in the homes, schools, offices etc
- It serves as resort centres which attracts tourists from far and from near
- It is used as a means of transportation in areas they exist
- It serves as home for aquatic animals such as fishes, crocodiles etc
Uses of human resources
- They are used for the coordination of production processes
- They are used for the extraction of mineral resources from the soil for
further uses
- They are used for the cultivation of the soil for farming and other
productive purposes
- They are used for operation of industrial machines for production
purposes.
- They are used in putting the factors of production such as land, labour
and capital into proper use
- They are used for the achievement of nation’s desired economy
- They are the key to enduring quality and competitive advantage of a
nation
Uses of capital resources
- it is used in the production process of goods and services
- They help to satisfy human needs
