SOURCES OF HISTORY

Historical sources also known as historical material or data are the original sources that contains important historical information that are traceable to an event.

 

There are three sources of history

  1. Primary sources
  2. Secondary sources
  3. Tertiary sources

 

PRIMARY SOURCES
these are materials produced by the people or groups directly involved in the event or topic under discussion either as participants or as witnesses.

Examples of primary sources are:

  1. Oral tradition(forefathers)
  2. Artifacts
  3. Legends
  4. Folklores
  5. Arhival materials e.g Benin art, Nok art
  6. Photography
  7. Audio and video recording etc

Some primary sources of history are written documents:

  1. Diaries
  2. Letters
  3. Census data
  4. Speeches
  5. Court record
  6. manuscript

EVALUATION:   

  1. Define historical sources
  2. List five primary sources of history

SOURCES OF HISTORY

SECONDARY SOURCES

A secondary source is one that gives information about a primary source. They are evidence of the primary source.

Some examples of secondary sources of history include

  1. textbooks
  2. journals
  3. government publication
  4. biographies
  5. autobiographies
  6. magazines and newspaper articles
  7. reprint of artworks
  8. websites
  9. anniversary brochure etc

TERTIARY SOURCES

A tertiary sources presents summaries or condensed versions of materials, usually with references back to the primary and/or secondary source.

Some examples of tertiary sources of history include

  1. student’s projects
  2. bulletins
  3. memos
  4. almanac
  5. encyclopedia
  6. manuals
  7. guidebook
