Determiner is a word that is used before a common noun to show which thing you mean

Rules to observe in using determiners

1.   You use “an” before words that begin with the vowels A, E, I, O, U. For example: an apple, an elephant, an egg, an insect, an orange, an umbrella etc. Exceptions: When “U” is pronounced as its letter name in a word, “A” is used. For example: a uniform, a university etc

2.   “A” is used before words that begin with consonant sounds. For example: a teacher, a classroom, a sink, a bed etc

3.   “The” is used when talking to a particular thing, person, animal, event, incident or idea. “The” is also used if there is only one of its kind
