NOTE

INTRODUCTION TO ART

The meaning of art is subjective and can vary widely depending on cultural, historical, and personal perspectives. Generally, art is considered to be a creative expression of human skill and imagination that evokes emotion, stimulates thought, or communicates ideas.

History and origin of Art

The history and origin of art trace back to early humans, who began creating art tens of thousands of years ago. Cave paintings, such as those found in Lascaux, France, date back to around 17,000 years ago and are some of the earliest examples of artistic expression. These early artworks likely served both practical and symbolic purposes, such as recording hunting scenes or expressing spiritual beliefs.

Art in Nigeria

In Nigeria, art has a rich and diverse history that spans thousands of years. Nigerian art encompasses a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, pottery, textiles, and painting. One of the most famous examples of Nigerian art is the terracotta sculptures created by the Nok culture around 500 BCE to 200 CE. These sculptures are known for their intricate details and expressive forms, and they provide valuable insights into the culture and society of ancient Nigeria.

Throughout Nigerian history, art has played a significant role in religious rituals, cultural traditions, and social practices. From the Benin Bronzes to the Igbo Ukwu bronzes, Nigerian art reflects the complexity and diversity of the country's cultural heritage.

Types of art

  1. Visual art refers to artworks that primarily rely on visual elements, such as color, form, line, and composition, to convey meaning or evoke emotions. Examples include paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, photography, and digital art. Visual art is appreciated primarily through sight, although it can also involve tactile elements in the case of sculpture or mixed-media works.
  2. Non-visual art, on the other hand, encompasses artistic expressions that may not rely solely on visual elements but engage other senses or forms of communication. This category includes literary arts, such as poetry, prose, and drama, which primarily use language to create imagery and evoke emotions. Performing arts, including theatre, dance, music, and film, involve live or recorded performances that appeal to auditory and sometimes visual senses.
