NOTE

CLASSIFICATION OF PLANTS BASED ON THEIR NATURE

  1. CEREALS: they are grains cultivated mainly for their seeds e.g maize, guinea corn, rice, millet, wheat etc
  2. LEGUMES: Their seeds are edible sources of plant protein and this part also serves as fodder for livestock e.g cowpea, groundnut, soya bean, pigeon pea etc
  3. ROOT AND TUBER CROPS: These are plants with edible roots and tubers which develop swollen underground and are harvested by man e.g yams, cassava, cocoyams, sweet potatoes etc
  4. FRUITS AND NUTS: These are the edible parts of plants which can be eaten by man. They supply essential vitamins and minerals to the body e.g pawpaw, tomatoes, guava, cashew, orange etc
  5. VEGETABLE CROPS: They are the soft edible parts of herbaceous crops which can either be cooked or eaten raw e.g onions, tomatoes, pumpkin, sweet melon, water melon etc
