PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION

Physical education is the continued education of an individual through carefully selected and properly conducted physical activities.

Physical education originated from Greece. It was used to train the body and soul and worship their god, ‘Zeus’.

Below are some laid out purposes of physical education

  1. Physical development: The entire body is well developed due to physical education
  2. Skills: skills such as running, climbing etc are developed
  3. Emotional stability: it produces sound mental health and a balanced mind
  4. The vital organs of the body function well improving sleep, enhancing appetite and bringing a toned build-up of the body

Scope of physical education

  1. Movement exploration and body mechanics
  2. Rhythmical activities
  3. Gymnastics
  4. Simple game activities
  5. Simple relays
  6. Athletics and games
  7. Aquatics
  8. Outdoor and recreational activities

Health education on the other hand is an education of an individual on how to maintain and improve his/her health

Differences between physical education and health education

Health education

  1. it contributed to students’ ability to control behaviour that protect and promote health and avoid health risks
  2. students are able to formulate their personal values and group norms that support healthy living
  3. students learn basic health concepts and influence on their health
  4. Skills required to adopt, practice and maintain health-enhancing and safe behaviours are developed.
  5. it helps students to be better consumers of information, manage stress and make healthy decisions

Physical education

  1. It provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in a wide variety of physical activities that contribute to an active lifestyle
  2. It provides building blocks for skill development, skill analysis, physical fitness, stress reduction, social skills etc
  3. Students learn to assess and set goals, evaluate their own physical fitness and use the knowledge to improve and maintain their current fitness level
  4. Learners who participate in physical education learn the benefits of physical activity and how it contributes to a healthy lifestyle
