NOTE

WHO IS GOD?

God is the Supreme Being, the Creator of the universe, who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present. In most religious beliefs, God is seen as the source of life, the one who created everything that exists. God is also considered to be eternal and beyond human limitations, filled with love and goodness, and constantly involved in guiding and sustaining creation.

Attributes of God
The attributes of God are characteristics that describe His nature. Some of the primary attributes include:

  • Omnipotence (All-Powerful): God has unlimited power and is capable of doing anything.
  • Omniscience (All-Knowing): God knows everything—past, present, and future.
  • Omnipresence (Everywhere at Once): God is present everywhere at the same time.
  • Eternal: God has no beginning or end and exists beyond the limitations of time.
  • Holiness: God is pure, righteous, and without sin.
  • Love: God is loving, caring, and compassionate towards all creation.
  • Justice: God is fair and just, rewarding righteousness and punishing wickedness.
  • Mercy: God is forgiving and kind, showing mercy to those who seek forgiveness.
  • Immutability: God is unchanging, remaining the same throughout time.

Names of God in Different Nigerian Languages and Their Meanings
In Nigeria, different ethnic groups refer to God by names that reflect His attributes and role as Creator:

  • Yoruba: Olodumare - “The Almighty” or “The One who holds all power.”
  • Igbo: Chineke - “God the Creator” or Chukwu - “The Great God.”
  • Hausa: Allah - Shared with Islamic tradition, it means “The One God.”
  • Efik/Ibibio: Abasi - “The Supreme One.”
  • Urhobo: Oghene - “The Great God.”
  • Edo: Osanobua - “The Supreme Being.”
  • Isoko: Oghenero - “God Almighty.”
