NOTE

INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURE

Agriculture can be defined as all the activities involved in soil preparation, crop production, animal rearing, distribution and marketing of agricultural produce.

ORIGIN OF AGRICULTURE

Agriculture is the oldest industry in the world. Man’s greatest need has always been to feed himself and provide shelter. The early man wandered about gathering fruits, vegetables and hunting wild animals to feed himself. After eating the fruits, he discovered that the seed thrown away germinated and produced new plants.

He gradually learned how to cultivate and harvest the crops. He initially began by using crude tools he made with his hands.

The earliest recorded history of agriculture was around the fertile Tigris and Euphrates river valley in the Mesopotamia plain. Thus it spread to other parts of the world.

The discovery of agriculture led to the settling down of people and growth into communities.
