THE ART OF ENTERTAINING

SUBJECT: FOOD AND NUTRITION

CLASS:  SS 3

DATE:

TERM: 1st TERM

WEEK 4 & 5

TOPIC: THE ART OF ENTERTAINING

FOR WEEKS 4 & 5

Entertaining means to invite people to have food and drink with you. When ever such occasions for entertaining arise, there must be guests and hosts or hostesses. The guests are the people who come to share the joy and happiness of the occasion while the hosts or hostesses are the people who are around to receive or welcome the guests. The success of any occasion is the joint responsibility of host and guest.

The first step in organizing a celebration where guests will be invited is ‘planning’. The host should decide on the type of guests to be invited and the type of entertainment they will be given in terms of food and drinks. The host will also decide the nature of the celebration or party i.e. whether dinner, buffet, cocktail, etc. After this initial planning, the next step is sending out invitation cards to the guests. The following points must be borne in mind when sending out invitation cards:

  1. The invitation should be in keeping with the nature of the event, e.g. a formal invitation for a formal dinner or dance; an informal note or oral invitation for a picnic at the beach.
  2. The response should be in keeping with the invitation and should repeat the date and time to prevent misunderstanding.
  3. A response is obligatory if requested and should be prompt.

For example:

A formal invitation can be worded thus:

Mr. and Mrs. B. Thomas

Request the pleasure of the company of

Mr. & Mrs.………………………………………………….

At dinner on Monday

Eight of November 1989 at

Six o’clock in the evening.

                                                                                                                RSVP

                                                                                                          Laide Thomas

A FORMAL INVITATION REQUIRES A FORMAL RESPONSE AS FOLLOWS:

Mr. & Mrs.  ………………………………………………

Accept with pleasure Mr. & Mrs. B. Thomas’

Kind invitation for dinner on

Monday, the eight of November 1989 at

Six o’clock in the evening.
