TOPIC: INTRODUCTION TO WORLD WIDE WEB (www) I

World Wide Web

The World Wide Web, abbreviated as www or w3 and commonly known as the web, is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the internet. With the browser, one can view web pages tat may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them via hyperlinks.

Brief History of www

Using concepts from earlier hypertext system, English engineer and computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee, now the Director of the World Wide Web consortium wrote a proposal in March 1989 for what would eventually become the World Wide Web.

At CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, Berners-Lee and Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau proposed in 1990 to use “Hypertext..... to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will”, and publicly introduced the project in December. “The World Wide Web was developed to be a pool of human knowledge, and human culture, which would allow collaborators in remote sites to share their ideas and all aspects of a common project.

BASIC TERMINOLOGIES OF WWW

The basic terminologies of the internet to be considered are:

  1. www
  2. Web browser
  3. Website
  4. Web page
  5. Home page
  6. Protocol

WWW

www refers to all the web sites, resources and users in the internet that are using HTTP

(Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) It is also a universe of network accessible information, an embodiment of human knowledge. The documents are formatted in a mark-up language called HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) that supports links to other documents, as well as graphics, audio, and video files.

This means you can link from one document to another simply by clicking on hot spots.

The World Wide Web is a global set of documents, images and other resources, logically interrelated by hyperlinks and referenced with Uniform Resources Identifiers (URLs).

URLs allows providers to symbolically identify services and clients to locate and address web server, file servers, and other databases that store documents and provide resources and access them using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), the primary carrier protocol of the web.

Web Browser

A web browser (simply a Browser) is a software application that enables computers users to locate and access web pages. Browser translates the basic HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) code that allows a user to see images, text videos and listen to audios on websites, and connects to other web pages through hyperlinks. Examples of web browser are Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple’s Safari, Google chrome and so on.

Website

A website (also written Web Site or simply site) is a collection of related web pages containing images, videos or other digital assets. A website is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via a network such as the internet or a private local area network through an internet address also called URL.

BENEFITS OF A WEBSITE

Some of the benefits of s website are:

Cheaper and Flexible Advertising

It is cheaper to advertise in the internet than the print media. Internet adverts can be accessed for a longer period of time.

Market Expansion

The website allows businesses to break through to other countries beyond their geographical location.

Promotes e-commerce

Some websites are online stores for buying and selling goods, thus promoting e-commerce.

Supports e-learning

Today there are many e-learning websites in the world that are promoting and enhancing education across the globe.

Increase in sales and revenue earning

A website also supports e-commerce and revenues are earned form the transactions.

24 by 7 by 365

The website opens your business to your customers 24 hours in a day, 7 days of the week and 365 days of the year.

Offer Convenience

It offers convenience to the customers. A customer can stay at the comfort of their home, browse the website and perform transactions and so on.

Add Value and Satisfaction

By offering convenience, customer service is improved and value is added to the customer and business.

Improves Credibility

A website gives you the opportunity to tell potential customers who you are, what you do and why you deserve their trust and confidence.

Growth Opportunity

A website serves as a great place to refer potential investors to, to show them what your company is about to do, what it has achieved and what it can achieve in future.

Two-Way Communicative Marketing

Customers can quickly and easily give feedback on your product and/or marketing approach.

WEB PAGE

A web page or webpage is a website’s html document that is displayed by a web browser.

HOME PAGE

A home page or homepage refers to the initial or main web page of a web site.

It is the web page that automatically loads when the website is invoked by a web browser.

PROTOCOLS

In computing, a protocol is a set of rules that governs the communication between computers in network. A protocol is a convention or standard that controls or enables the connection, communication, and data transfer between computing devices.

There are many protocols used in web technology.  The following will be discussed;

  1. HTTP
  2. HTML
  3. STMP

HTTP

HTTP means Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol. It is a networking protocol that governs exchange, transfer and distribution of htlm documents in the www. HTTP is the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web.

HTML

HTML means Hyper-Text Markup Language. HTML is the predominant markup language for web pages. HTML is the basic building blocks of Web Page.

SMTP

SMTP means Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. SMTP is an internet standard for electronic mail (e-mail) transmission across internet Protocol (IP) networks.
