CONTENT:

(Bulk purchasing)

Definition:  Budgeting can be defined as the management of time, money and energy planned wisely to suit the needs of an individual or group of person.

Food is an expensive item in a family budget, so it is important to shop economically and

carefully.  In budgeting for food these guidelines should be followed.

 

  1. Plan the weekly shopping before going out and stick to the plan as far as possible.
  2. Look for competitive prices, offers and multi-buy savings.
  3. Look for good quality foods, that is, good value for money.
  4. Buy only the amounts that are required.
  5. Compare prices.

BULK BUYING

Many people buy food in bulk once a month or less.  This saves time and money.

 

The following must be available in order to be able to bulk buy.

  1. Sufficient storage space in the home for the food.
  2. The initial outlay of money.
  3. Transport to and from the shop.

 

Bulk buying can be very useful, but consumers must take care not to buy unnecessary items and not to eat more food just because it happens to be in the house.

 

The following are factors to consider when planning for or preparing the food budget.

 

  1. The amount allocated for food.
  2. Storage facilities available in the house.
  3. Foods in season.
  4. The keeping quality of foods to be stored.
  5. The nutritive requirements of the family members as dictated by the composition of the family and their health.

 

Buying in bulk has the following advantages:

  1. It is cheaper than buying in piece meal.
  2. It makes ingredients readily available in the house have the home maker is able to take care of emergency situations.
  3. Protects the home maker from market price fluctuation.
