NUTRITIONAL NEEDS FOR ADULTS AND AGED

         An adult is a person who has reached maturity , and is grown in size and strength.

Adults are no longer growing unlike infants, and adolescents. However because of the body’s wear and tear the adult will require some nutrient for body maintenance.

Adults who lead an active life will require more protein and energy than adults who live a sedentary life. Consumption of vegetables, fruits, skimmed milk, fish, lean meat and cereal products should be increased.

       An adults diet should be balanced and suitable for his work, health and age for instance among adult there are sedentary and manual workers, the sick or the invalids, the aged, pregnant and lactating mothers. An adults diet should be balanced and suitable for his work, health and age. A poor diet in adult could lead to different types of problems. Consumption of too much of fats could lead to obesity.

NUTRITIONAL NEEDS FOR THE AGED

     A good supply of green vegetables and fruits is necessary to meet the needs for folic acid, other vitamins and roughages. Old people also require plenty of liquid in the form of water and milk. Where an aged man spends most of the time indoors, there could be shortage of vitamin D. An aged man who has problem with his digestive  and absorptive process may require dietary advice. Dental problems may prevent some old people from taking adequate diet. Food that do not digest easily such as fried food should be avoided. A Good supply of green vegetable and fruits is necessary to meet the need for folic acid other vitamins and roughage. Aged people also require plenty of liquid in the form of water and milk.

NUTRITIONAL NEEDS FOR PREGNANT AND LACTATING MOTHERS

       A pregnant woman is one who is carrying a foetus or unborn baby in her womb.

A pregnant woman should eat good balanced meals in order to produce a healthy normal body. A  lactating woman is one who is feeding her baby with natural milk from her breast(breast feeding).The pregnant and lactating mother need the same dietary requirement that is a good supply of body building food like meat, fish, eggs, milk and liver etc.

Energy giving foods are also required, food such as rice, yam, cassava, cereals, fat and oil.  Protective foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Water is needed in sufficient amounts by the pregnant and lactating mother for removal of body waste.

The following guidelines could be helpful:

  1. Protein:-The expectant mother has an increased demand for protein for the formation of new tissues. 
  2. Energy ;-Extra energy is required to meet the increased physiological needs of the mother. Active women involved in farm work will require more energy. There should be a proper balance between energy intake and energy output in other to prevent overweight.
  3. Minerals and vitamins;-A pregnant woman has an extra need for calcium to make the bones of the foetus. Anaemia is common  in pregnant woman because of the increased demand for the mother and foetus.
