MEANING OF MEAL PLANNING

Meal planning is an act of organizing a meal/menu for a person, family or group of people.� These can be done when all the food nutrients are considered.� No single food can contain all the nutrients needed by the body; also a food can also contain two or more nutrient, this is referred to as a mixed diet.

IMPORTANCE OF MEAL PLANNING

  1. Meal planning is a good guide for the purchase of food needed at home.
  2. Meal planning makes the service of a balanced meal regular and consistent.
  3. It allows for good management of food item thereby preventing waste and loss of food nutrients
  4. It allows for great variety of meal for the family.
  5. Meal planning allows for wise use of scarce resources.

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE MEAL PLANNING

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING FAMILY MEALS.

  1. The meals must contain all necessary food nutrient. Choose food that contain a variety of nutrient.
  2. The nutritional needs of the different group of people in the family must be provided for in the plan.�
  3. Avoid monotony by varying the foods.
  4. Make use of food in season. These are normally cheaper could be of good quality.
  5. Consider the money available. The money available to a family will determine the types of foods which it can afford.
  6. Plan meals several days ahead of time so as to save money and time.
  7. Buy goods quality foods. Simple locally available foods are often more nutritious.
  8. Cook food by the most suitable method.
  9. Time your cooking so that meals can be severed and eaten oil.
  10. Serve meals as attractively as possibly.
