WHAT IS SKILL ACQUISITION

Skill acquisition is the ability to get training on a particular task or function and become an expert in it. Skill is very important in the life of every human. The reason many technician earn more than university graduates is because the technicians acquire more practical skills than the theories which cannot be compared to thegraduates that had more theories during their university days. This has made many graduates unemployable and bringing the number of jobless people on the high side. This is giving many youths in the world sleepless nights. It is one of the causes of rapid growth in crime in many parts of the world.

It evident that the highest number of unemployment is found in African continent, the truth remains that the major causes of unemployment among these vibrant youths is the lack of skills�

to back up what they have learnt from their institutions of learning.

IMPORTANCE OF SKILL ACQUISITION

Any skilled person can survive in many environments. Skill is a key used to open doors of fortune. As water is essential to human life, so is skill needed I the life of any serious minded person. Skill can do a lot of great work in the life of every living person. Some of the benefits of skill is as follows:

  1. Self employment
  2. Diverse job opportunity
  3. Employment generation
  4. Functioning effectively at the place of work
  5. Crime reduction
  6. Self esteem

In addition, Jesus Christ was into carpentry before He started His ministry. Also apostle Paul was into tent making which really helped him in ministry. He did not depend on the church for support. The likes of the Apostles were fishermen before they became followers of Christ.

THE NEED FOR EMPLOYMENT

The youths of every nation are very vital to the development of that nation. They are considered to be the future and the driving force which cannot be ignored. Government of the day should not ignore them. When the youths are not engaged, it could lead to diverse consequences on the nation in terms of economic, social, political and most cases religious wise. This argues the need for government to be pro-active. To be a youth is good but empowering the youth is better. Empowerment can be defined as the means of encouraging or assisting somebody. Therefore, youth empowerment is the means through which the youth of any country are assisted to succeed in life. This is not restricted to the government but also to individuals that have the ability to do so. Any serious government should have skill acquisition schemes and vocational training centres that can solve the problem of youth unemployment and restiveness.
