Features, operation and Functions of a Mouse

The mouse is an input device that can be used to perform many actions in Windows and windows-based applications. The standard mouse has a ball on the bottom and is attached with a cord to the system unit.

Types of Mouse: the two types of computer mouse are mechanical mouse and optical mouse.

  1. Mechanical mouse contains a rubber ball that makes the cursor move according to the rotation of the internal rollers. Though mechanical mouse are very robust, they need frequent cleaning to remove the dirt on the rollers and the ball for smooth running.
  2. Optical mouse or the laser mouse works well on several surfaces excluding bright surfaces and in bright lights. Computer mouse uses three types of interfaces: the serial type (which comes with 9 pin d-type plug), the PS/2 type (which is a circular DIN c connector and is easy to setup) and the USB interface mouse (which can be plugged in to any USB port, it is very flexible and can be removed when the computer is on).

Uses of the Mouse

  1. Pointing
  2. Clicking
  3. Double-clicking
  4. Right-clicking
  5. Dragging

How to operate a mouse

Step 1: ensure you hold the mouse correctly by placing your finger on the left button, a finger before the ring finger on the right button. If the mouse you are using has a button or wheel in the middle, you can use any of the two fingers to roll the button.

Step 2: to click, press the button usually the left one and quickly release the mouse. The mouse should be firm when you do this.

To double click run applications, documents or folders, you click the left button twice as fast as possible.

To right click to access shortcut menus, you click the right button and release your hand from the mouse.

To drag files, press the left button, still holding the mouse, move the mouse without releasing the button until you get to the required position. To leave the file there, you click the left mouse.

To scroll through a page quickly, click inside the page, roll the middle button up (if you want to scroll up the page) or down (if you want to scroll the page down).

To deselect a selection, left click outside the selection and quickly release the mouse.
