INVALIDS AND CONVALESCENT

An invalid is one who is sick, while a convalescent is one who is no longer sick but is in the process of gradual recovery after illness. The 2 groups of people may suffer

  1. A break down of some body  tissues and loss of weight through infection.
  2. Loss of appetite, weakness and shortage of specific nutrient in the body.

The nutritional needs for invalids and convalescent depends on the kind of illness they are suffering from or have suffered.

In planning meals for an invalid one has to consider the nature of the illness so as to plan on time, usually meals prepared for a sick person are usually light and easy to digest.

There should be a rich supply of the essential nutrient for a quick recovery.

Supply enough to replace muscle wasting caused by the illness.
