TOPIC: DATA AND INFORMATION

Reference book: Hiit @ School, Computer Studies for Senior Secondary Education.

CONTENT

Data is a collection of facts, such as values or measurements. The data about a triangle are: the base, length and height.

Information means processed data. For example, the area of a triangle is gotten by calculating it from the base, length and height. Therefore the area is information.

Differences between data and information

The words data and information are usually used interchangeably. Both data and information are facts, knowledge learned about an object, person or place. The following are differences between data and information:

    Data    Information

  1. Data is the lowest level of knowledge.     - Information is the second level i.e. the processed

                                outcome of data.

  1. Data by itself alone is not significant. - Information is significant by itself.

iii. Observations and recordings are done    -     Analysis is done to obtain information.

     to obtain data.

Data refers to the lowest abstract or a raw input which when processed or arranged makes meaningful output. Information can be a mental stimulus, perception, representation, knowledge, or even an instruction. Examples of data can be facts, analysis, or statistics. In computer terms, symbols, characters, images, or numbers are data while analysis of these will give information.
