LESSON PLAN FOR 5th WEEK

CLASS : PRIMARY 1

AGE: 5-6years

DURATION : 3 periods of 40 mins each

TOPIC : Homophones

CONTENT : Homophones( four, for) (sun, son) (sale, sail) (tale, tail) (no, know) (male, mail)

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to;

  1. Define the term ‘Homophones’
  2. Give examples and meanings of some pairs
  3. recognize and discern homophones in text

ENENTRY BEHAVIOR : Pupils can identify alphabet letters

SET INDUCTION : The teachers uses the sentences: ‘there are three things wrong with these sentences. Raise your’re hand when you sea them’. To arouse the students by asking them to figure it out within a specified time

INTRODUCTION

-Explains that homophones are words that sound the same but have different meaning and spellings

-draws a T-chart on the board and writes two common homophones in the heading sections of the T-chart e.g ‘no’ and ‘know’

- Explains that ‘no’ can be used to say you cannot do something or something is not allowed while ‘know’ means to understand something

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

-in the T-chart, draw a picture that represents each homophone(i.e a facing shaking back and forth under ‘no’, and a light bulb under ‘know’

- Asks pupils volunteers to think of sentences that use homophones(e.g ‘My mom said no’ and ‘I know my name’) and write the sentences under the correct words. Keep going until there are three sentences under each

GUIDED PRACTICE/INTERACTIVE MODELLING

- Hands out Holy homophones worksheets to each pupil

- explains the directions of the worksheet and have the pupils complete them independently

-walk around the room to monitor the pupils ang help as needed

INDEPENDENT WORKING TIME

- Have pupils create their own sentences with incorrect homophones, then switch papers and identify

- asks the pupils to use their dictionaries to find the meaning of the following words

1. tale 

2. tail
