TOPIC : Use of ‘A’ and ‘An’ 

CONTENT : Use of ‘A’ and ‘An’- why ‘A’ is pronounced using the letter name instead of the sound

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to;

  1. Using ‘A’ for words that begin with a consonant sound
  2. Using ‘AN’ for words the begin with vowel sound

ENTRY BEHAVIOR : Pupils can identify and sound the Group 1-6 Consonant/vowel/consonant words

SET INDUCTION : The teachers uses the three-letter words songs to arouse the interest of the pupils 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES : Singing, storytelling, playway, gestures/demonstration,gestures, explanation and repetition 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS : Flash cards of words we can use ‘A’ for and words we can use ‘AN’ for, phonics sound chart, sentence strips showing words with ‘A’ or ‘AN’ appearing before them

PERIOD 1 AND 2: Using ‘A’ for words that begin with a consonant sound

The teacher revises the Group 1-6 consonant/vowel/consonant words

The teacher introduces the topic on the board as Using ‘A’ for words that begin with a consonant sound

DISTINGUISHING WORDS WE USE ‘A’ FOR

The teacher explains that the article ‘A’ is used before words that start with a consonant sound e.g

1. a bag

2. a cap

3. a car

4. a dog

5. a cat 

The pupils respond and participate

EVALUATION

The teacher evaluates the pupils listing the following words on the board and asking them if ‘A’ would be used or not

1. ___ egg

2. ___ fox

3. ___ elephant

4. ___ cot

5. ___ cup

The pupils are given a classwork to write or not write ‘A’ for the following words

1. ____ fan

2. ____ gun

3. ____ hut

4. ____ ink

The teacher marks, commends and corrects the pupils where necessary

Sentences with Group 6 consonant/vowel/consonant words: the fox bit the red hen, run, run for the big gun, ben fed the hen and the pig, rub the kid in the big tub, let the cat sit in the sun

Use of ‘A’ before words beginning with consonant sounds and ‘AN’ before words beginning with vowel sound (why it is pronounced using its name rather than its sound)
