CONTENT : Sounding, identification and associating jolly phonics sounds z, w, ng, v, oo, OO with pictures and objects

 

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to;

  1. Identify and sound all the Group 5 letter sounds
  2. Associate all the Group 5 letter sounds with pictures and objects

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR : Pupils can identify all the Group 4 letter sounds

 

SET INDUCTION : The teachers uses the phonics songs of all the Group 5 letter sounds to arouse the interest of the pupils 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES : Singing, storytelling, playway, gestures/demonstration,gestures, explanation and repetition 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS : Flash cards, phonics sound chart, audiovisual clips of the phonics sound/song, pictures of objects with the Group 5 Phonics sounds, cardboards, crayons/coloured pencils, scissors, paper tape

PERIOD 1 AND 2: Identification of letter sounds z-OO

INTRODUCTION

The teacher introduces the topic as using sounds to say our letters. This is done using storyline 

z-STORY

Have you ever seen a bee? It buzzes around the flowers making the sound ‘z  z  z  z  z’

ACTION

The children pretend to be bees. They tuck in their elbows and flap their arms like wings, making a continuous /zzzzzzzzzzz/ sound.

w-STORY

It is a windy night. The wind is so noisy that it wakes up everybody. It makes the sound, ‘w  w  w  w  w’.

ACTION

The children pretends to be the wind and blow on their open hands saying, /w,  w,  w/

ng-STORY

Bally is a very young and strong lad. He lifts up some heavy weights ‘ng  ng  ng  ng’

ACTION

The children pretend to lift a heavy weight above their head, saying, /ng/.

v-STORY

Dilian loves to drive her van. She drives to her friend’s house holding the steering wheel ‘v  v  v  v’.

ACTION

The children pretend to be driving a van, turning the steering wheel, and making a continuous /vvvvvvvvvv/ sound.

oo and OO

STORY

A cuckoo clock has a small bird inside it. Every hour the bird comes out of the clock and makes the sound ‘oo  OO  oo  OO’

ACTION

The children pretend to be the cuckoo in the clock, moving their head back and forth saying /oo, oo;  oo, oo/.

IDENTIFICATION

Using flashcards with the z-OO written on it, the teacher makes the pupils to repeat it severally

EVALUATION

The teacher asks the pupils to identify 

a. letter sound 'z’

b. letter sound ‘w'

c. letter sound 'ng'

d. letter sound 'v'

e. letter sound 'oo'

f. letter sound ‘OO’

CLASS ACTIVITY

With the cardboard sheets and the coloured pencils/crayons, the teacher draws each of the Group 5 letter sound and cut them using the scissors

The Pupils watch, listen and participate

CONCLUSION

The teacher marks the pupils work, commends and make necessary corrections

In the activity book, the pupils are asked to associate the given picture and objects with the Group 5 letter sounds
