TOPIC: THE WORLD AND ITS PEOPLE

    The sun is static while the Solar System revolves around it. The Solar System has eight planets; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto. The list shows their nearness to the sun.

The earth is the planet where man lives and is totally covered by the air. About 71% of the earth is covered with water while the remaining 29% is covered with land.

 

CONTINENT 

The word continent refers to the large, unbroken landmass of the world. There are seven continents in the world; Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Antarctica.

Each of the continents except Australia and Antarctica is further subdivided into countries.

TOPIC: COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD

    Country is a political unit with a distinct system of government which is demarcated by political boundaries.




ASIA

This is the largest continent by size and population. It covers one-third of the total land surface of the world. She is bound by Oceans and is also surrounded by seas. Some of the countries in Asia are India, China, Soviet Union, Japan, Israel, Iraq, Korea etc. the major languages are Hindu, Russian, Chinese and 

Arabic.

 

AFRICA

Africa is the second largest continent in the world with about 53countries; Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Mali, Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire. Most of the people in Africa are blacks. The major languages in African are Bantu, Arabic, Swahili, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo etc. However, Africa has two major official languages; English and French.

 

NORTH AMERICA

North America is the third largest continent in the world. It is mainly made up of the United States of America, Canada Mexico etc. Most of the present Americas are descendants of Europeans who migrated to their present locations. There are large group of African Americans who are descendants of African taken to North and South America as slaves but later given freedom.

The main language in this continent is English with French spoken in the North (Canada) and Spanish in the South (Mexico). It is a highly developed continent.

 

SOUTH AMERICA

South America is the fourth largest continent with 13 countries-Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela etc. the people of South America are descendants of people from Europe, Asia and Africa. The main languages are Portuguese and Spanish, though some speak English.

  

EUROPE

 The whole land area of Europe is peninsula that is land area that stretches out into the sea. Like North America, it is a highly developed region. Some of the countries in Europe are Great Britain, Spain, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Switzerland and Turkey. . The main languages in Europe are English, German, French, Spanish and Italian 

AUSTRALIA: Australia is the smallest continent in the world. It is surrounded by the Indian and pacific oceans. Australia is a continent as well as a country. The major language in Australia is English.
