TOPIC: DRESS SENSES

The basic elements of design are:

  1. Line: This refers to the outline of an object or to obvious lines within it.
  2. Shape: This refers to the form of a solid object, which is created when lines are combined .The outline of a garment is its shape.
  3. Space: This refers to the three-dimensional area that is to be designed .It is the entire area within a garment.
  4. Texture: This is the way the surface a fabric looks and feels.
  5. Colour: This is one of the most important elements .It has much visual effect and its own language.

COLOUR WHEEL AND HARMONY

Colour wheel: This is an arrangement of colours in a circle, like the face of a round clock, to show how they are related. These include

  1. The primary colours: Red, yellow and blue.
  2. The secondary colours: Orange, green and purple or violet.
  3. Tertiary or intermediate colours: These are six and each is a blend of the primary and secondary colours .They include red-violet ,blue-violet, blue-violet, blue-green, yellow-green, yellow- orange and red-orange.
  4. Warm colours: These are red, yellow, orange, yellow-orange, and red-orange.
  5. Cool colours: These are blue, green, purple, blue-purple, and blue-green.

COLOUR HARMONY OR SCHEME

Colours are beautiful be themselves .They can be used singly .But two or more colours can be combined to produce a pleasing colour scheme or harmony for an outfit. There is different colour combination or harmonies include:

  1. Monochromic colour harmony: This uses different shades of the same colour, or one colour with black and white.
  2. Contrasting colour harmony: This uses two or more colours in varying strength .e.g. blue and red.
  3. Toning colour� harmony: This uses two or more similar colours e.g. purple and blue

MAKING PATTERNS WITH LINES

Line is another element of design that is very important in choosing the right style of clothes for your figure. These patterns with lines are:

  1. Vertical lines: These can add height. They make a short and stout person appear similar and taller.
  2. Horizontal line: These tend to add to the appearance of width and reduce height.
  3. Diagonal lines: These should appear from left to right when looking at a garment .They take the eye downward in a slimming line.
  4. Curved lines: These create soft lines that are usually flattering.






GUIDELINE FOR CHOOSING PATTERNS

  1. Choose a pattern that is suited to the figure in size and colour.
  2. Small figures (Person of small size) should choose small patterns. Large prints might be too overpowering for them.
  3. Tall slim figure should choose large designs.
  4. Vertical stripes make a figure look slimmer and taller.
  5. Horizontal strips appear to add width and reduce height.
