THE GREAT COMMISSION [Matt. 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-20, Luke 24:44-48]

At the close of his earthly ministry Jesus gave the ‘Commission’ that is the famous“Great commission” to His apostles who had been with Him and worked with him. A sort of commission had been given earlier on in Matt 10, in which they were to go only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, healing and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom.

This can be termed a “mini” or lesser commission, for it did not cover all creed and races. Now Jesus gives out a commission that sounds a universal note to go and make disciples of all nations regardless of race or creed.

Jesus has been given that authority by His father in heaven and He transfers the authority to us with the promise that He is with us always even to the end of the ages. The Lord gives a charge to keep, a charge to evangelize the world. We should therefore not be neglectful of this divine assignment.

EVALUATION

What is the great commission?

THE ASCENSION[MARK 16:19, LUKE 24:50-51, ACTS 1:1-1]

Ascension is the departure of Jesus from the earth to heaven on the fortieth day after the resurrection. Jesus led His disciples out as far as Bethany where He lifted up his hands and blessed them. As he did that, he departed from them. The disciples later returned to Jerusalem joyfully and were always in the temple, blessing God. In the book of Acts 1:1-12, Jesus addressed his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the father (i.e the endowment of power from above- The Holy Ghost power). They asked him if he will at this time restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus answer them by saying “It is not for you to know the times or the season, which the father hath put in his own power… “It was at the point he told them to wait in Jerusalem because they will receive power after the Holy Ghost had come upon them and as a result of the power, they will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and other places.

After He had spoken these things, while they were looking at him, he was taken up and a cloud received him out of their sight. This is Acts accounts of Christ ascension into heaven.
