Content

Fishery

Fishery is a term used to describe the science of catching or growing fish and other aquatic organisms from natural and artificial water bodies, processing and marketing theses organisms. The growing of fish in an artificial pond is called FISH FARMING

CLASSIFICATION OF FISH

  1. Classification based on habitat
  1. Fresh water fish: this group of fish lives only in fresh water bodies that is water that doesn’t contain salt such as fresh water ponds,streams, lakes and rivers.
  2. Salt water fish: this group of fish lives only in water that contains salt such as lagoons, oceans and seas.
    1. Classification based on body structure
  3. Bony fishes: these fishes possess bony skeletons. E.g tilapia, croaker
  4. Cartilaginous fish: these fishes possess soft bones and most of them are found in salt water. E.g dog fish

Uses of fish and fish products

  1. Serves as source of food to man
  2. It’s a great source of protein
  3. It generates foreign exchange when they are exported to other countries
  4. Oils from fish are used to manufacture medicines
  5. It provides job and income to many
  6. Shells of oyster and periwinkles are sometimes mixed with sand and cement for building houses

Fishing Methods

  1. Trapping: this involves the setting of traps to catch fish. The use of gears made from ropes or raffia wooven into various models of enclosure.
  2. Netting: it involves the use of various types of nets to catch fish
  3. Electro fishing: this involves the use of electricity to catch fish like current sent across, killing fishes between poles
  4. Draining of ponds: this involves draining of pond water for easy use of net
  5. Ultrasonic: this is an instrument which can make sound in water and attract fishes so that they can be trapped
  6. Impaling: it is the use of spears to attack and catch big fishes

 

Fishing Tools or Gears

  1. Fishing nets: they are generally used for harvesting fishes from either ponds, streams, rivers, oceans, seas etc. There are various types of net,some are
    1. Scoop net: a small net which may be rectangular or cylindrical in shape with the required size. It has a wide mouth and a short or long handle
    2. Gill nets: they are used to harvest bigger fish(es) leaving the smaller fishes until they attain bigger sizes
  • Seine nets: it is capable of collecting all the fishes in the pond at once because it has smaller mesh size than the gill nets
  1. Fishing trawler: this is a large fishing boat in which large nets called Seine nets can be attached. It is used for harvesting large fishes in deep seas or oceans
  2. Fishing basket: designed like a basket. It has cylindrical shape with a wide mouth. There is a trigger close to the mouth which holds the bait. The bait attracts the fish and when it enters the basket, the trigger pulls down and basket closes.
  3. Hook and line: it has a long wooden handle, a long line, rope or twine, a float and a hook which holds the bait, while the fish tries to bite the bait, it swallows the hook, thus, gets caught
