TOPIC: MAINTENANCE OF THE FAMILY HOUSE

FOR WEEKS 5-6

For the members of the family to live comfortably at home, the house needs to be maintained and pleasant to the people.

Surfaces in the home�

Different homes are made of different surface or floor depending on materials used. There are two types of surfaces in the house or home. These include:

  1. Wooden floor
  2. Cement floor

Wooden Floor or Surface: This is the type of floor or surface made by wood and it required maintenance to keep them shining and look comfortable.

Cement Floor or Surface: This is the type of floor or surface made of concrete or cements and it last long than wooden floor or surface.

Equipment and Materials for Maintenance of House�

In order to clean the family house, you need some equipment and materials to clean the house so that it looks comfortable and hygienic. These equipment and materials are:

  1. Broom
  2. Brushes
  3. Duster
  4. Mops and dust pans
  5. Vacuum cleaner
  6. Soap
  7. Floor polisher
  8. Scouring powder
  9. Yam stem sponge
  10. Abrasive:
  11. Detergents
  12. Carpet sweeper:

Brooms: Brooms are made from the midribs or palm leaves .They are ties together into bundles in quantities that can be handle easily.

Uses of Brooms: Broom is used for sweeping and washing the floor and packing rubbish within the house and outside the premises.

Brushes: There are different brushes depending on the use. We have scrubbing brush, toilet brush and shoe brush.

Uses of Brushes

  1. Brushes are used for scrubbing floor and toilet.
  2. Some brushes are used for polishing shoes.
  3. It is used for washing carpet and rug at home.
  4. It is used for washing hard clothing such as jeans wears

Duster: Duster is used for dusting dust and cleaning electronic gadgets at home such as television, chair, and mirror.

Mop and Dust Pan: ��� This is the equipment consisting of stick with threads of thick strings of sponges or a bundle, used for cleaning floors or other surfaces such as toilet, parlour and other surfaces in the house.�

Vacuum Cleaner: This is a device that uses air pump to create a partial vacuum to suck up dust and dirt usually floor and optionally from other surfaces as well. It can be used in homes as well as in industry.

Uses of Vacuum Cleaner:

  1. It is used for cleaning rugs and carpets.
  2. It is also used for dusting curtains and chairs�

Soap: This is the detergents used mostly in many home and industry .The most common ones include toilet soap, bar soap and medicated soap.

Uses of Soap

  1. Toilet soap is used for bathing
  2. Some soap is used for washing clothes.
  3. Medicated soap helps to kill bacterial and germs.
  4. Some soap is for washing floor and general cleaning.

Floor Polisher: This is an electrical appliance that is used to clean and maintain non-carpeted floor, such as hardwood, marble, tile or linoleum .It is also called floor buffer. They have a large round scrubbing pad spinning in a circle in on direction which is powered by small motor, usually directly over the centre of the pad.

Scouring Powder: Scouring powder is a specially prepared dry detergent used for cleaning pots and pans.

Yam Stem Sponge: A sponge is a piece of soft substance full of small holes which can suck up liquid and is used for washing .Natural sponge can be obtained from direct yam vines.

Abrasive: This is a rough powder used for cleaning or smoothening something .Abrasive may be of two types: locally made and manufacturer also produce abrasive like shinox.

Detergents: A detergent is a cleaning material which when added to water helps to remove stains or dirt .Detergent are in powder form, liquid. Some are white while others are blue colour.

Carpet Sweeper: A carpet sweeper consists of long metal hands and a wooden case on wheels .It helps to picks up dust and dirt as it is pushed back and forth.

Uses: It is used for quick removal of surface dirt from rugs and carpets.
