WEEK SIX
TOPIC: SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS (STIs)
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs) are illness spread from one person to another through sexual relationship or intercourse with an infected person.
TYPES OF STDS AND CAUSES
- Gonorrhea : It is caused by the bacterium neisseria gonorrhea. It is spread through sexual contact with an infected person.
SYMPTOMS/SIGNS OF GONORRHEA
- Painful urination.
- Itching and discharge from the private part.
iii. It can cause infertility and may affect the sight of an unborn child if the mother is infected.
Treatment: It is treated with antibiotics
- Syphilis – caused by the bacterium treponemapalladium. It is caused through sexual act with an infected person.
SYMPTOMS/SIGNS OFSYPHILIS
- Sores on the sex organs
- Fever, aches, rashes and hair loss
iii. It can lead to insanity
Treatment: It’s treated with antibiotics
- AIDS – caused by a virus called human immune deficiency virus (HIV).
EXPLANATION
HIV – Human Immune Deficiency Virus – These viruses cause AIDS
AIDS – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome; this is a condition that occurs after HIV might have weakened the body immune system.
-‘Acquired’because it is passes from one person to another.
-‘Immune Deficiency’ because it weakens the Immune system of the body
-‘Syndrome’ because it is characterized by the combination of many signs and symptoms.
HOW HIV SPREADS
- Having sex with someone who already has HIV.
- Transfusion of infected blood.
- Use of infected blade or needle used by an infected person without sterilizing it.
- From infected mother to babies while in the womb, through breastfeeding and as the baby is being born.
EVALUATION QUESTIONS
- Define STD.
- List two prevention of sexually infections.
PREVENTION OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS
- Always use sterilized skin piercing instrument such as blade or needle.
- Always use well screened blood before transfusion (STDS free blood).
- Avoid sexual intercourse till you are married.
- Avoid multiple sexual partners.
- Make use of protective measures when necessary.
MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT OF INFECTED PEOPLE
- They must be given prompt treatment
- They must eat good and highly nourishing food.
- Their room and clothes and utensils must be sterilized often.
- Their faith should be built in God by praying with them giving them Christian books.
- They should be loved and cared for by their friends and relatives.

SELF -MEDICATION
Self-medication is the act of using drugs that are not prescribed by medical experts / personnel.
CONSEQUENCES OF SELF-MEDICATION
- Taking over or under dose
- One may become vulnerable to infections and complications.
- Self-medication may lead to mental or physical distress which may result to one being useless or dropout from school.
- There may be serious side-effect of a given drug later in life.
